Full-Length Exams:

Scaling Assessments Across Districts

Designed the complete end-to-end AP-style exam experience — from scheduling and district-wide monitoring to realistic student simulation and modernized faculty scoring.

Project Summary

The Problem

Districts needed digital AP-style exams but workflows were fragmented and outdated. Existing systems lacked realistic exam simulation, flexible scheduling, and modern scoring interfaces.

The Solution

I created the complete exam lifecycle design: scheduling, timed sections, monitoring, student simulation (mimicking real exam conditions), and reporting dashboards. I also redesigned Free Response Question (FRQ) scoring, modernizing an outdated system to make evaluation faster and more intuitive.

The Impact

  • ↓ Decreased admin overhead by 15% (hours saved per exam cycle)

  • ↑ Increased student completion rates by 9% 

  • ↑ Increased teacher satisfaction with scoring tools by 25%

  • Established a scalable template for district-wide digital assessments

Context & Problem

District administrators needed to administer full-length AP-style practice exams digitally — complete with timing, monitoring, and performance reporting.

Problems included:

  • Fragmented workflows: Scheduling, proctoring, and reporting happened in separate tools.

  • Poor student experience: No digital flow replicated the actual feel of taking the AP exam.

  • Outdated scoring: Free Response Question scoring tools were slow, unintuitive, and caused teacher frustration.

My Role & Responsibilities​

  • Lead UX Designer responsible for exam workflows end-to-end.

  • Mapped multi-role flows (admin, teacher, student).

  • Collaborated with PMs, engineers, and district faculty to validate requirements.

  • Documented exam question types and designed new FRQ scoring interfaces

Design Process & Iteration

Research & Insights

  • Admins: Needed consolidated scheduling + monitoring to reduce overhead.

  • Teachers: Wanted clear reporting and simpler FRQ scoring.

  • Students: Wanted practice that “felt like the real exam.”

  • Key Insight: Success depended on end-to-end orchestration — not just one feature, but a unified flow across all roles.

Process

  • Designed timed section flows with automated transitions (simulating real AP conditions).

  • Prototyped student exam interface with realistic question navigation and timer.

Redefined Flow

  • Documented all AP question types (MCQ, FRQ) to ensure complete coverage.

  • Redefined FRQ scoring flow → simplified grading actions, inline comments, and batch navigation.

Final Solution

Admin & Teacher Dashboards: Central scheduling, monitoring, and live progress tracking.

  • Student Experience: Full simulation of AP exam — timed sections, clear navigation, question types.

  • Reporting: Class + individual performance metrics with drill-down insights.

  • FRQ Scoring Redesign: Modernized interface with intuitive scoring actions, streamlined workflows, and reduced friction.

Reflection & Next Steps

Lesson Learned: Large-scale assessment design must balance realism for students, efficiency for admins, and usability for teachers.

Next Steps

  • Expand exam simulation to additional subjects beyond AP.

  • Add AI-assisted scoring recommendations for FRQs (with teacher override).

  • Integrate predictive analytics to help teachers identify at-risk students sooner.

This project proved the power of UX leadership in orchestrating multi-user, enterprise-scale workflows — delivering clarity and realism across the entire exam lifecycle.
